UGC-NET is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian citizens for the award of "Junior Research Fellowship and appointment to Assistant Professor", "Appointment to Assistant Professor and admission to PhD courses". D.' and 'Admission for PhD courses only'.

Eligibility Requirements for NTA UGC NET Examination
Age Restrictions:
JRF: Candidates must be 30 years old or younger as of the first day of the month during which the examination takes place, specifically 01.01.2025. A concession of up to 5 years is granted to applicants from OBC-NCL (according to the Central register of OBC accessible at the website: www.ncbc.nic.in) /SC/ST/PwD/Third gender groups as well as to female candidates.
Assistant Professor: There are no age restrictions when applying for UGC-NET for the position of Assistant Professor.
PhD Admission: There are no age limits for candidates applying for UGC-NET for the purpose of PhD admission.
Educational Qualification:
(a) Aspirants belonging to the General/Unreserved/General-EWS categories who have obtained a minimum of 55% marks (without any rounding) in a Master’s Degree or its equivalent from universities/institutions acknowledged by UGC (accessible at the website: www.ugc.ac.in) in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences (which includes languages), Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science, and other related disciplines are deemed eligible for this Test. A list of subjects available at the Post Graduation level can be found in Appendix -III. Candidates from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) within the Non-Creamy Layer/Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribes (ST)/Persons with Disabilities (PwD)/Third gender category who have scored at least 50% marks (without rounding) in a Master’s degree or equivalent examination qualify for this Test.
(b) Individuals currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program or its equivalent or those who have taken their qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination with results pending or candidates whose final examinations have encountered delays may also submit an application for this test.
(c) Candidates who have completed a 4-year or 8-semester bachelor’s degree program are required to have achieved a minimum of 75% marks in total or an equivalent grade on a point scale wherever applicable.
Those candidates who qualify in the NET, based on a four-year undergraduate degree, will be eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) award and for admission into Ph.D. programs. However, candidates qualifying in the NET, based on a four-year undergraduate degree, will not qualify for appointment as an Assistant Professor.
(d) Individuals who are enrolled in a Four Year/8 Semester Bachelor’s Degree Program and are currently in their final semester or year may also submit an application for the examination. Nonetheless, those individuals will be accepted on a provisional basis and will be deemed eligible for the JRF award or Ph.D. admission only after they meet the stipulations specified in the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, within a two-year period (if qualified for the JRF award) or a one-year period (if qualified solely for Ph.D. admission) from the moment the NET results are announced; otherwise, they will be regarded as disqualified.
(e) Applicants holding a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree Program are permitted to take the exam in a specific subject (the List of Subjects and their Codes for UGC - NET December 2024 can be found in the official notification) that they intend to study for their Ph.D., regardless of the field in which their four-year degree was awarded.
